Abstract Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unitresulting from androgen-induced increased sebum production, altered keratinization, inflammation and bacterial colonization of the hair follicles on the face, neck, chest and back by Propionibacterium acnes. Scars are formed when a breakout penetrates the skin deeply and damages the tissues beneath it. Atrophic or depressed acne scars are most common on the face. They are formed when not enough collagen is made while the wound is healing. There are three types of atrophic acne scars: boxcar, ice pick and rolling scars. Many treatment options are available to improve atrophic acne scars, including chemical peels, dermabrasion/microdermabrasion, punch grafting, tissue fillers, needling, non-ablative fractional resurfacing lasers and ablative lasers. However, these treatments are often limited, due to its variable and operator-dependent efficacies, the temporary nature of clinical improvements and adverse effects. |
