Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of simulated intra-oral adjustment on the color and translucency of multi-layered zirconia.Materials and Methods: A total of 48 zirconia specimens were randomly classified into 6 groups (n=8) according to the type of zirconia (Ceramill Zolid ht+White (HTW), Ceramill Zolid ht+ Preshade (HTP), Ceramill Zolid fx Multilayer (FXM), VITA YZ XT Multicolor (XTM), IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime (ZCP), KATANA YML (KML). The zirconia specimens were designed with dimensions 10 mm length,10 mm width and 1 mm thickness. All the specimens were designed, milled and sintered. All the specimens were subjected to finishing and polishing with well-defined sequence of a polishing system. The color data were measured by a spectrophotometer before and after simulated intra-oral adjustment. The color differences and the translucency parameter values were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed by three tests; One-way ANOVA, Two-way ANOVA, and Post-hoc Tukey test (P=.05).Results: One-way ANOVA test showed a statistical significant difference (P<.001) between studied zirconia materials as regard color difference (∆E) with the lowest mean value is detected with Vita YZ XT. The interaction of combined effect of changing material and simulated intra-oral adjustment has statistically significant difference (P=.001) on translucency parameter (TP). Lowest ∆TP is detected for Zolid fx Multi-layer.Conclusions: The color and translucency of both color-gradient and strength-gradient multilayered zirconia can be influenced by the material brand and the clinical adjustment. Except for KATANA YML, the color change in multilayered zirconia brands after clinical adjustment was not beyond the clinically acceptable limit of the color difference.Keywords: Monolithic zirconia, pre-colored, multi-chromatic, conventional, color, translucency.
