Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia imposes a significant disability on people suffering from and very often unable to achieve life various goals and affects how people think, feel, and behave. Impaired insight is very common in schizophrenia and has serious consequences on prognosis and treatment process. The insight focused intervention Program for Schizophrenia (IFI) is a new psychological treatment that has been developed to deal with poor insight in schizophrenia. The goal of this training program is to improve the patient’s awareness and self-understanding, which are frequently impaired in people with schizophrenia. Aim: this study aimed to assess the effect of insight focused intervention on insight level among patients with schizophrenia. Study design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized Setting: The study was conducted at inpatient psychiatric department of the Mansoura University Hospital, Mansoura City, Egypt. Study subjects: A purposive sample of 60 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia was included. Tools: socio-demographic data sheet, Birchwood Insight Scale, Schizophrenia Quality of Life-18 and Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale were used. Results: this study revealed that there was statistical significant difference in mean scores of insight, Quality of Life and Positive and Negative Symptoms before and after insight focused Intervention. Conclusion: the study concluded that, the insight focused Intervention was effective with schizophrenic patients’ concerning improving insight, quality of life and positive and negative symptoms. Recommendation: the Insight Focused Intervention should be incorporated into treatment regimen of schizophrenic patients. In addition, further research is needed to examine the relationships between Insight Focused Intervention on relapse rate and recovery in schizophrenic patients.
