Abstract

Acne scars treatment is difficult and challenging. Low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a form of ultrasound that delivers at low intensity pulsed waves, it is typically used for therapeutic purpose in rehabilitation medicine. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is commonly used in aesthetic medicine. HA accelerates wound healing and tissue regeneration (eg, burns, ulcers). HA has an antiinflammatory and bio-stimulating effect. Objective: This study aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (US) alone and combined with non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid in treatment of atrophic acne scars. Patients and methods: This comparative split face study was conducted on 20 patients with bilateral atrophic acne scars on the cheeks. LIPUS was applied on both sides followed immediately by topical application of hyaluronic acid on left side. Each patient received 12 sessions 3 times per week for one month and followed up after 3 months and after 1 year of the last session. Evaluation of response was done at baseline and after 3 months and after 1 year of last session using Evaluator Based Qualitative and Quantitative Global Scarring Grading Systems and Quartile grading scale, patient satisfaction and FASQoL.
