Abstract Aim: To evaluate the tumor associated micro-environment including micro-vessel Density, macrophages and mast cells, eosinophils in conventional and unicystic ameloblastic lesions. Methodology: 22 specimens of ameloblastoma distributed equally between the study groups, conventional and unicystic ameloblastoma were retrieved from the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. Micro vessel density using CD34 and the number of macrophages, mast cells and eosinophils demarcated by CD68, toluidine blue, congo-red respectively were assessed. Results: The mean of blood vessels, mast cells and eosinophils were higher in conventional ameloblastoma than uni-cystic ameloblastoma with statistically significant difference except for eosinophils than was statistically insignificant. The mean value of macrophages count was higher in unicystic ameloblastoma than conventional ameloblastoma with statistically significant difference. Moreover, there was no statistically significant correlation between blood vessel density and eosinophils, mast cells, macrophages in either of the groups. Conclusion: The significant difference in the connective tissue elements between the studied groups suggests that tumor associated microenvironment has a crucial role in the diverse behavior of different types of ameloblastoma Keywords: ameloblastoma(AB), mast cells(MCs), blood vessels(BVS), Mean Vascular Density(MVD). |
