Abstract

Background: Hairdressers are exposed to a diversity of harmful agents in the workplace. These comprise chemical, physical agents in addition to ergonomic and biological hazards. Furthermore, proper knowledge of hazardous exposures and following of safety measures among hairdressers leads to reduction of adverse health outcomes. Aim: to evaluate occupational health hazard and safety measures among hairdresser workers in port said city. Subject and method: A descriptive cross – sectional research design was utilized. The research was carried out at hairdresser salons at Port Said city, Egypt. A purposive sample of 209 hairdressers, who were recruited for a period of 5 months. Tools: two tools were used including, hairdresser’s structured interview questionnaire and observational checklist for workers use of different personal protective devise. Results: The current study showed that 6.7% of the studied hairdressers had good knowledge regarding overall hazards and most of them had unsatisfactory practices related to the prevention of the dangers of hairdressing, moreover, 38.3% of them had low practice of safety or reduction for causes of accidents in the work environment. Conclusion: Safe practices of the majority of them that related to the prevention of the dangers of hairdressing and reduction for causes of accidents in the work environment were un satisfactory as well as their good knowledge about overall hazards were deficient. Recommendation: Health education programs should be provided to the hairdressers to raise their awareness about the measures to prevent health hazards and value of disinfecting their equipment.
