Abstract

Vortex tube is a device having no moving parts that separates a
compressed gas stream into two lower pressure streams with one stream
having higher temperature and the other having lower temperature than
the inlet stream. This phenomenon is referred to as energy (temperature)
separation. This study presents numerical and experimental studies to
determine the performance of vortex tube. The performance of vortex
tube is characterized by the maximum values of the cold and hot
temperature difference at the outlets of the tube as well as the cooling
and heating coefficients of performance. In the numerical study,
ANSYS-15 software with ICM and Fluent, Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) is used to simulate heat transfer process and fluid flow
patter through vortex tube. The basic governing equations of mass,
momentum and energy conservation as well as turbulence equations are
used to predict and calculate the three-dimensional, compressible
turbulent flow parameters in the vortex tube (to realize the effects of
operating conditions). Some assumptions and boundary conditions are
applied to solve numerically the governing equations. Comparisons
between published available experimental results and the present
numerical results are performed to select the suitable
