Abstract

To accommodate the continuous demand for electricity supplies, many high-voltage transmission power lines are constructed. They continue to increase in number as well as in areas covered emitting anthropogenic electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and electric fields (EFs) to the terrestrial ecosystem. The introduction of such EMFs and EFs may have a considerable impact on living organisms near high-voltage power lines. The biological and behavioural influences of EFs on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae) were examined. Moreover, the levels of neurochemicals in flies exposed to EF were evaluated. In addition, the effect of EF on the biochemical composition, physiology as well as immunological gene expressions was determined after exposure.
