Abstract

Summary
The use of a jigsaw learning strategy helps students to develop their teamwork skills which can be one of the strategies to build cooperative learning. They found that the implementation of jigsaw has significantly improved students’ performance (Chang & Benson, 2020).
Jigsaw provides students with varied learning outcomes. It is effective in developing students’ argumentation skills (Effendi-Hsb, et al., 2019), creative thinking ability, pedagogical knowledge, communication skills (Halimah & Sukmayadi, 2019), collaborative skills and learning motivation (Fernandez-Rio, et al., 2017). Jigsaw had also been successful in enhancing students’ participation and enthusiasm in learning, confidence and enjoyment to learn, responsibility for topic-to-learn, and even jigsaw had been effective in reducing students’ anxiety in learning (Hasibuan et al., 2020).
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of jigsaw learning strategy on maternity nursing students’ theoretical and practical achievements.
Simple random sampling technique was used. The researcher brought the lists of numbered students’ names from the Student Affairs Department at the faculty, then the researcher chose the odd numbers of the students to form both the study group and the control group.
Data collection was carried out throughout the period from October 2021 to the end of December 2021.
It was done through four tools: the first was self-administered questionnaire sheet that was designed by the researcher. It was used to assess personal characteristics of students as: (age, gender, marital status, residence, and previous level of education. The second tool was students’ knowledge assessment questionnaire (pre-post-test). It was designed by the researcher to assess the students’ achievement, it included 20 questions regarding the theoretical part of postpartum minor discomforts. The third tool was the checklist form, where the researcher used the formal checklists of her department to assess the practical part of postpartum minor discomforts for students (checklist for perineal care, breast care, and uterine massage). The fourth tool was students’ opinion sheet. It was developed by the researcher based on the related literature to assess students’ opinions related to jigsaw strategy as a learning method among study group.
The present study revealed that:
• There was a significant difference between the study and the control groups regarding the students’ theoretical achievements (post & follow up) as; students’ theoretical achievement scores were higher among the study group compared to the control group at post and follow up exams.
• There was a significant difference between both groups regarding their practical achievements as students’ practical achievement scores were higher among the study group compared to the control group at post and follow up evaluation.
• Students’ opinions regarding jigsaw strategy, most of them reported that, this method enhanced team work, communication skills, critical thinking skills and self-confidence
In conclusion, the study revealed that: Jigsaw learning strategy is effective in enhancing maternity nursing students’ theoretical and practical achievements.
