Abstract

Acute abdominal pain is a common complaint in children who are brought to the pediatric ED. Considering the risk of radiation from CT scans, MDCT is recommended in cases of pediatric abdominal pain with confusing presentation in the ED that cannot be diagnosed correctly after clinical data and sonography. The use of MDCT scans can offer greater accuracy as well as an ability to identify alternative diagnoses such as appendicitis, gastrointestinal abnormalities
The practice of radiology in imaging patients with acute abdomen has changed dramatically in the past few years. The plain abdominal radiographs have been largely replaced with US and CT. In particular, helical CT, and, even more, MDCT – the latest technical development – permit the examination to be performed in less time, with greater diagnostic accuracy, and with less patient discomfort. The topographic classification of pain (i.e., localized pain in one of the four abdominal quadrants, diffuse abdominal pain and flank or epigastric pain) facilitates the answer to specific questions. Therefore, close cooperation with the referring physician prior to imaging remains essential for rapid and accurate diagnosis.
MDCT is extremely beneficial in the evaluation of acute pediatric abdominal diseases, such as intussusception, acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, renal stones and mesenteric lymphadenitis.
Our study was conducted in Assiut University Hospital & Assiut Police Hospital in the period between December 2021, and December 2022. The study enrolled 99 children presented with acute abdomen, ranging in age from 1 day to 18 years.
The most frequent final diagnosis was acute appendicitis and its complications which show the highest percentage (24.5%).
