Abstract Background: A cancer diagnosis can have a wide-ranging impact on mental health. Cancer patients usually experience high levels of psychological distress symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Cognitive behavioral nursing intervention is one of the most evidence-based psychological interventions for the treatment of several psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Aim: Explore the effect of cognitive behavioral nursing intervention on depression and anxiety among cancer patients. Subjects and Method: A quazi- experimental design (pre, post, and follow-up evaluation) was used. The study subjects comprised a sample of 63 cancer patients. Setting: Cancer patients in the oncology unit at Al Shifa Medical Complex in Port Said City. Three tools were utilized to collect data which were; the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Coping with Illness Inventory; in addition to the personal and clinical data sheet. Results: The study revealed that a highly statistically significant difference was noticed between studied cancer patients ’ depression levels at pre and post program. Also, half of the studied cancer patients had moderate levels of anxiety at pre intervention, while more than one-third of them had moderate levels of anxiety at post intervention. Conclusion: The cognitive behavioral nursing intervention program had a significant effect on lowering the level of depression and anxiety among the studied cancer patients at post program compared to preprogram. Recommendations: Cognitive behavioral nursing intervention programs should be used in conjunction with usual treatment for cancer patients. |
