Abstract

Aim: Evaluate the effect of the addition of Ag nanoparticles on the antibacterial activity,
solubility and ions release of compomer restorative material at different time interval.
Methodology: 0.025 ml nanosilver alcohol solution (5000 ppm) was manually mixed with 2g
of Composan glass (compomer material). Composan glass without nanosilver was used as the
control. A total of 48 disc shaped samples were prepared (24 from each group) with
dimensions of 15 x 1 mm and immersed in distilled water for 24 h, 1 month and 3 months.
After each time interval, 24 discs (4 in each group at each immersion time) were assessed for
antibacterial activity by the agar diffusion test using Streptococcus mutans. For water
sorption and solubility, 24 discs (12 in each group) were evaluated by means of weighting the
samples before and after water immersion. The fluoride release from the samples in ppm was
measured by using a fluoride ion selective electrode. The silver ion released in ppm was
determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer.
Results: The experimental group showed significantly higher inhibition zone values for all
the follow up results in comparison to the control group. For water sorption test, the higher
values were detected in the experimental group after 1 month and 3 months. While for the
solubility the higher values were detected in the experimental group after all the follow ups.
Regarding the fluoride ion release, comparison between both groups showed that there was
no significant difference after all follow ups (P<0.05). For the silver ion release, the results
showed significant difference regarding all follow up with higher release values detected in
the experimental group.
Conclusions: Composan glass incorporated with 0.025 ml Ag nanoparticles is promising
antibacterial restoration against Streptococcus mutans
