Abstract

Architecture is a discipline that contributes to science when it is related to the construction of buildings and to art when it is related to pleasure and satisfaction in spatial experience. Aesthetics is the discipline that studies the pleasure of humans and how they approach the world through their senses. Human-computer interaction advances every day of our lives, especially after the expansion of the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). By combining these two majors, this thesis formulates the framework for establishing a system that evaluates architecture aesthetics based on the interaction between AI and human methods. The first part differentiates some philosophers and their theories about aesthetics that help in weighing how people are concerned about art and how they relate it to their lives throughout history. Also, the discussion about Neuroaesthetics helps in studying the biological basis of aesthetic experience. This experience consists of three steps: perception, cognition, and emotional experience. Then, it demonstrates recent applications of AI in evaluating aesthetics, how people interact with AI, and the characteristics needed to build a reliable AI system that people will enjoy interacting with by leading the system and knowing the reasons for each of its outputs. After that, it distinguishes AI methods that are used in architecture, such as shape analysis tools and generative design tools for buildings. Finally, the framework is introduced as it is divided into three stages: a) the crust stage, which is concerned with the shallow features of architecture aesthetics evaluation; the shape, b) the mantle stage, which evaluates the high levels of features, and c) the core stage, which concludes the aesthetic appreciation of a new building.
