Abstract

Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that is gradually decreasing in many countries. It is caused by Mycobacterium leprae, an intracellular pathogen that preferentially infects macrophages (MFs) and Schwann cell. Objective: To estimate serum lysosomal associated membrane protein 2 (LAMP2) in leprosy patients to assess its role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Materials and Methods: This study was carried upon 40 patients of leprosy and 20 healthy individuals of matched ages and sexes, collected from outpatient clinics of Tanta University Hospital and Kafr El-Sheikh Dermatology and Leprosy Hospital with approval code 33234/07/19 of medical research ethical committee of Tanta Faculty of Medicine. Slit skin smear was done with bacillary index to confirm the diagnosis and determine the type of leprosy. Measurement of serum LAMP-2 level was done by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
