Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the mental, emotional and psychological health of Frontline nurses. The physical and mental health of the nurses is at risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fear of COVID-19 is linked to community nurses’ stress at work and may have an impact on their decision to leave their positions and the nursing field (Labargue & Alexis, 2021). Nurses have already presented the lowest levels of work satisfaction and resulting stress during outbreaks. These challenges included patient overload and COVID-19 practices, which could affect nurses’ health and ability to perform their works (Elhanafy & El Hessewi, 2021).
Satisfaction with the work of nursing staff is extremely important to provide the highest possible level of care to patients. The COVID-19 pandemic has a negative impact on nurses’ professional work satisfaction and the quality of patient care. The perspective of the shift in working circumstances was severely impacted by fear of COVID-19 pandemic. Due of the necessity of performing it during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a considerable decline in work satisfaction (Makowicz et al., 2022).
This Study aimed at investigating the influence of fear of COVID-19 pandemic on work satisfaction among staff nurses through: Assessing fear of COVID-19 pandemic as reported by staff nurses, assessing the level of work satisfaction among staff nurses, and finding out the influence of fear of COVID-19 pandemic on work satisfaction among staff nurses.
A descriptive correlational design was used to carry out this study. This study conducted at Aswan Oncology Center. It affiliated to Secretariat of Specialized Medical Centers. The Subjects of this study included Staff nurses working in the aforementioned study setting who met inclusion criteria that working in full time and had at least one year experience in nursing work. They were 100 out 134 staff nurses.
The data for this study was collected by using two tools that were: The first tool: Multidimensional fear of COVID 19 scale. First Part: personal characteristics, it aimed to collect demographic characteristics of studied staff nurses such: age, gender, marital status, educational qualifications, years of experience, and department.
Second Part: Multidimensional fear of COVID 19 scale, it aimed to assess fear of COVID-19 reported by studied staff nurses, through 3 dimensions that are: Fear of being infected (5 items), Psychological response (10 items), and COVID 19 threat (8 items).
The second tool: work satisfaction scale, it aimed to assess level of staff nurses work satisfaction by 7 dimensions that are: Task (6 items), Nurse-to-Nurse Interactions (5 items), Nurse-to-Physician Interactions (5 items), Decision making (7 items), Autonomy (8 items), Professional status (8 items), and Pay (6 items).
The present study revealed the following main results:
• Slightly more than half of the studied staff nurses 54% their age was less than 30years old, while, only 6% aged more than 40 years. And more than two thirds 63% of them were female. So, 67% of studied staff nurses had baccalaureate degree of nursing, and 62% of them had experience years less than 10 years.
• It was observed that 32% of them working at departments. While only 8% of them working at training department.
• The total mean score of staff nurses reported fear of COVID-19 regarding threat of COVID 19 with mean percent 82%. While some of them fear of COVID 19 regards psychological response with mean percent 61%. Therefore, their total fear of COVID 19 with mean percent 72%.
• The total work satisfaction levels of studied staff nurses was as follows: half of them had high work satisfaction level, 15% of them had moderate work satisfaction level, and 35% of them had low work satisfaction level.
• It’s evident strong positive statistically significant correlation between fear of COVID-19 and work satisfaction of studied staff nurses.
• Regarding work satisfaction levels of studied staff nurses regarding autonomy items. It was apparent that the percentage of them ranged from 50% to 90% had low level of work satisfaction related to all items of autonomy dimension.
• It observed that most of studied staff nurses 86% had high level of work satisfaction regards nurse-to-nurse interactions, while only 21% of them had high level of work satisfaction regards autonomy and pay dimensions.
• It showed that higher mean scores regarding COVID-19 reported by staff nurses who were female and aged less than 30 years. Moreover, there were statistically significance relation between fear of COVID-19 reported by staff nurses and their gender.
• It revealed that higher level percent regarding work satisfaction levels of 42%studied staff nurses who had experience less than 10 years. Meanwhile, half of them had low level of work satisfaction who aged more than 40 years, and technical health institute nurses Moreover, there were statistically significance relation between work satisfaction levels of studied staff nurses and their age and marital status. There was high statistical significance relation between work satisfaction levels of studied staff nurses and their age.
• There were statistically significant strong positive correlations among all fear of COVID-19 dimensions. The highest correlation between psychological response and Fear of being infected.
• There was moderate to strong positive statistical correlations between work satisfaction dimensions.
• There was a weak statistically significant relation between studied staff nurses’ qualification and Fear of being infected, psychological response. Also, there was a weak statistically significant relation between studied staff nurses’ experience years and Total fear of COVID-19.
• It showed that lower fear of COVID-19 scores of unmarried staff nurses than married. And higher fear of COVID-19 scores of female staff nurses than male.
• It’s apparent the single statistically significant factor was the staff nurse’s qualification as bachelor staff nurses higher work satisfaction scores than other nursing qualifications of them.
Conclusion
Slightly less than three-quarters of studied staff nurses had fear of COVID-19. So, half of the studied staff nurses had high work satisfaction levels, about one-fifth of them had moderate work satisfaction levels, and about two-fifth of them had low work satisfaction levels. It’s evident strong positive statistically significant correlation between fear of COVID-19 and work satisfaction among staff nurses. These present findings answer the research question which stated that is there an influence of fear of the Covid-19 pandemic on work satisfaction among staff nurses?
Recommendations
• Conduct training programme to about modes of transmission of epidemic diseases to face disasters and outbreaks through infection control team.
• Supply and keep up essential supplies like PPEs (personal protective equipment).
• Encourage staff nurses to take apart to decision making.
• Adjust the payment of nursing staff to better match their work performance.
Further research
• Evaluate relationship between level autonomy and work satisfaction.
• Investigate the influence of outbreaks on quality of work life.
