Abstract

The aim of the work was to assess the safety and efficacy of interventions in patient with upper limb mechanical venous outflow obstruction.
The present study was carried out partly at Alexandria Main University Hospital (Vascular Surgery Department) and partly at UK. It was conducted on thirty (30) patients presented with VTOS and needed interventions. All patients met the criteria for selection, and all have an indication for intervention.
Patients were 23 males (76.7%) & 7 females (23.3%) and their age at the time of the intervention ranged from 20 – 54 years, with a mean age of 34.33 ± 9.378 years. The indication for interventiom was effort related upper limb venous complaint e.g arm swelling, pain, cyanosis, venous collaterals due to undelying McCleery syndrome, Paget-Schroetter syndrome or post-thrombotic syndrome.
Patients were categorised according to the diagnosis into three groups, Paget-shroetter syndrome (8 patients 12.7%), McCleery syndrome (15 patients 50%) and post-thrombotic syndrome (7 patients 23.3%). All patients (100%) presented with symptoms related to their dominant upper limb. Twenty-two (22) patients (73.3%) had the intervention in the right side while eight (8) patients (26.7%) had the intervention on the left side, one of the eight patients had bilateral symptoms however only the left side was indicated for intervention hence included in this study.
