Abstract

The incidence of cataracts and number of cataract surgeries performed rapidly increasing.
Development of postoperative dry eye has been implicated as an important obstacle to patient’s satisfaction despite an excellent visual recovery.
The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in tear film function in patients after phacoemulsification by anterior segment OCT.
The study included 28 eye of 28 cases underwent phacoemulsification for treatment of cataract at Ophthalmology department of Menoufia University Hospitals and Mansoura Ophthalmology Hospital in the period from December 2021 till December 2022.
All the included cases were subjected to detailed history taking (including ophthalmic history) and full ophthalmological examination. Evaluation of lacrimal tear and ocular surface was done using Tear film break up time and Schirmer 1 test.
Tear meniscus height was performed using Swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography instrument (Triton, Topcon).
The cases were followed up for one week, one month and three months postoperatively with recording of the previously mentioned parameters.
The results of this study showed that:
 The mean age of the cases in the study was 59.05 ± 6.19 years. Among the included cases there were 11 males (40%) and 17 females (60%).  The mean preoperative TMH values of the studied cases were 336.17±66.34μm. These values decreased to 314.78±60.97μm one week postoperative, 302.56±61.08μm one month postoperative. Then increased again three months postoperative to 321.94±62.41μm. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean score along the study duration (p =0.149).  The mean preoperative Schirmer test values of the studied cases were 12.33±2.27mm. These values decreased to 10 ± 1.94mm, one week postoperative, 8.56 ± 1.66mm one month postoperative. Then increased again three months postoperative to 11.06 ± 1.90mm. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean score along the study duration (p<0.01).  The mean preoperative TBUT values of the studied cases were 11.60 ± 2.14s. These values decreased to 8.44 ± 2.09s one week postoperative, 7.39 ± 1.86s one month postoperative. Then increased again three months postoperative to 9.72 ± 1.75s. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean TBUT along the study duration (p<0.01).
