Abstract

The study in this thesis was set to present different image segmentation tools that offer very
promising approaches in image processing especially for medical imaging that helps in increasing
the accuracy of computer aided diagnosing (CAD) systems. Accurate image segmentation will
lead to increasing the success rate of detecting the liver cancerous lesions in its early stages for
the purpose of treatment or surgery. Accurate segmentation needs integrating many tools and
algorithms due to the intensity similarities between the liver tissues and the neighboring organ
tissues, also the similarity in intensities of the liver cancer lesions and the liver tissues specially in
the early stages of the disease, in addition to the problem of the presence of various lesions in
diverged areas of one liver in advanced liver cancer cases.
