Abstract

Background: Burn scars represent a major burden. Many treatment modalities have been used over the years with varying effectiveness. Fractional CO₂ laser is capable of inducing proper wound healing and collagen remodeling which can be promising in the treatment of burn scars with better cosmetic and functional outcome. Aim of work: To evaluate the efficacy of fractional CO₂ laser in the treatment of burn scars clinically, histopathologically and histochemically. Result: Both VSS and POSAS showed significant improvement following treatment (P<0.001). The percent improvement in POSAS patient overall assessment was 44.44%. Collagen and elastic fibres showed significant improvement both as regards appearance and pattern (P<0.001, P=0.001 respectively) and as regards density (P=0.020, P<0.001 respectively). No significant correlation existed between clinical scores and histopathological/histochemical parameters. Side effects and complications were mild and tolerable. Conclusion: Fractional CO₂ laser is an effective and safe treatment modality for the treatment of burn scars.
