Abstract

50 years after first use, we still do not know what is the optimum treatment for organophosphate toxicity. Small studies suggest benefit from new treatments such as magnesium sulphate, but much larger trials are needed. Hence we aimed at evaluating the effect of intravenous magnesium sulphate on prognosis in treating acute organophosphate toxicity. Method: A comparative study at the National Egyptian Center for Toxicological Research (NECTR) between using magnesium sulphate and not using magnesium sulphate beside oximes and atropine in patients acutely intoxicated with organophosphates, Results: This study showed that the use of magnesium sulphate in acute organophosphate toxicity reduced mortality rate, hospital stay, atropine and oximes requirements and incidence of respiratory failure and arrhythmia but has no effect on incidence of liver failure and kidney failure and incidence of shock
