Abstract

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a clonal disorder charachterized by acquisition of somatic mutations in hematopoietic progenitors with accumulation of leukemic cells in the bone marrow replacing most of the normal hematopoietic cells. Several reports have highlighted the association of the polymorphisms of genes such as genes involved in detoxification of carcinogens like GSTP1 and DNA repair genes like RAD51 with specific cancers including AML. The causes of the majority of acute leukemias are unknown and likely to involve an interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Unfavorable genetic environmental interactions might be involved in the genesis of AML
