Abstract

Intracranial atherosclerosis is a well-recognized entity predisposing to stroke. Attempts at medical, surgical as well as endovascular management of this condition have been undertaken with modest unsustainable results and a significant complication rate. The use of balloon mounted stents has improved those outcomes; however, this still seems unsatisfactory. This seems to be changing with the introduction of a novel self-expanding stent system in conjunction with a newly developed angioplasty balloon both designed specifically for use within the intracranial vascular tree. We report results from a series of 30 patients and their statistical analysis. An overview of cerebrovascular anatomy, a detailed examination of procedural technique and a comprehensive review of literature dating back to the advent of the system are included
