Abstract

Benzopyran-4-one (chromone) scaffold is an interesting bioactive core eliciting a wide range of biological activities including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, anticancer, antiviral, anticonvulsant and antioxidant activities. Herein, we highlighted on the anticancer activity of the benzopyran-4-one (chromone) derivatives. The present investigation deals with the synthesis of new series of benzopyran-4-one (chromone) derivatives, incorporating sulfonamide moieties via different spacers namely, enamine (IIIa-f), methylamino (IVa-f), thiazolinone (VIIa-f) and imidazolinone spacer (Xa-f and XIa-f). The newly synthesized compounds were screened for their anticancer activity against two cell lines, namely, human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and human lung cancer cell line A-549. The results revealed that, the 4-(((4-Oxo-4H-chromen-3-yl)methyl)amino) benzenesulfonamide IVa exhibited potent anticancer activity, in addition, compounds VIIa, Xa and XIa showed good to moderate anticancer activity
