Abstract This thesis proposes two novel optimization approaches for achieving the optimal design of 1D photonic crystals. The {uFB01}rst approach is based on minimax criterion where nominal values of designable parameters are varied to best satisfy design speci{uFB01}cations. The second approach is based on design centering criterion, in which the objective is to maximize the probability of satisfying design speci{uFB01}cations.
