Abstract

Progressive collapse of structures takes place when a structure loses one or more of its main vertical load-carrying members such as columns and walls. The loss of such structural members may be due to accidental loading conditions, extreme loading or terrorist attack. Due to its importance, many international structural codes started to consider the progressive collapse resistance such as GSA guidelines and UFC guidelines. In the current study, the effect of structural irregularity, in both plan and elevation, on the progressive collapse resistance of RC multi-story framed structure is studied under gravity loads. The RC structure was designed according to Egyptian standards and its progressive collapse resistance was assessed using UFC guidance. The numerical results showed that all the studied cases satisfied the UFC guidelines requirements for progressive collapse resistance of reinforced concrete structures with safety factors equal to (4.8), (5.5), and (3.3) for beams, columns, and joints, respectively
