Abstract

The aim of this research is to study two factors effecting quality and efficiency of seed production in summer squash crop.
1st factor was the distance between the apiary ”honey bee colonies” and the cultivated field and 2nd factor was fruit thinning treatments. This research was conducted over two consecutive seasons 2013 and 2014 in both the apiary of the Faculty of Agriculture in Giza and Experimental Research Station - Faculty of Agriculture in Saft al-Laban. The distance between the apiary and the cultivated field was less than 100 meters in the first case, ”at the apiary of Faculty of Agriculture”, and the distance between the apiary and the cultivated field was greater than 1500 meters in the case of cultivation in the experimental research station, each area contained 3 treatments to fruit thinning 0T ” without thinning” , 2T ” thinning twice” and 4T thinning four times
The most important results obtained were as follows:
The treatment of the cultivated field near the apiary (less than 100 meters) gave the higher results in both measurements of mature fruits, average mature of fruit weight, average of both mature fruit length, mature fruit diameter, number of mature fruits per plant and average of total mature fruit weight per plant, in both seasons. The results were significantly different. Also, in the case of studying the seed yield, the area sown near the apiary gave higher results in terms of quantity and quality of the seed crop, the average number of seeds per fruit, weight of seeds per fruit, number of seeds per fruit, weight of fruits per plant, and weight of 100 seeds, The average percentage of germination in seeds and the average total yield of seeds per fadan. With regard to the measurements of thinning treatments, whereas, the treatment 0T was the best, followed by 2T, and then 4T, but there were no significant differences between the transactions in many cases.
from the previous results, It conclude that when planting squash for the purpose of producing seeds, in order to obtain the best seed crop in terms of quantity and quality, beehives must be abundant and close to the cultivated field to ensure the best pollination and to ensure the best seed yield, In addition to avoid excessive thinning treatments of the fruits
