Abstract

Jaw bone loss is triggered by various etiologies and its recovery is a complicated and prolonged procedure. several graft materials have been tested with various degrees of success to enhance and accelerate bone defect healing. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effect of Bisphosphonates (BPH) or Concentrated growth factors (CGFs) or combination of them on healing of experimentally induced bone defects in rabbits. Materials and Methods: 3mm width and 6 mm depth bone defects were prepared in 24 rabbits tibias unilaterally, then they were randomly divided into four equal groups. group I: no treatment. group II: treated by BPH. group III: treated by CGF. group IV: treated by BHP+CGF. Two of each group were sacrificed at 2, 4 and 6 weeks post operatively. Tibias were processed for Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and Masson trichrome staining. Images were then subjected to computer assisted digital image analysis followed by statistical analysis. Results: group I showed better healing with less collagen fibers and increased mineralization than group II. group III showed greater amount of bone with more collagen and more mineralization than group I and II. In group IV the quality of newly formed bone was better than any other group with increased mineralization and less collagen. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between groups. Conclusion: Mixing BPH with CGF showed best healing and bone quality results followed by CGF group, then control and finally BPH treated group.
