Abstract

Nephrotoxicity is defined as a fast decline in kidney function caused by the toxic effects of drugs and substances. Nephrotoxins are chemicals that cause kidney damage. It is one of the most prevalent kidney issues, that happens when the body is exposed to medicine or toxin that damages the kidneys. Gentamicin is an antibiotic that is used to treat a variety of bacterial illnesses. This includes, among other things, bone infections, endocarditis, pelvic inflammatory disease, meningitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sepsis. Gentamicin induces ephrotoxicity by blocking protein synthesis in renal cells, causing necrosis of cells in the renal proximal tubule, leading to acute tubular necrosis and acute renal failure which is accompanied by elevation in the kidney function parameters such as urea and creatinine as well as increasing the production of ROS that promotes apoptosis in the kidney.
