Abstract

Urban sprawl is an urban phenomenon representing the irregular model of the settlement’s urban growth due to its inability to meet the increased demands of its inhabitants. Therefore, It hinders achieving an integrated urban development inside the settlement and negatively affects the settlement and its surroundings. On the other hand, secondary cities play a vital role in global urbanization, especially in developing countries. This importance is because of their intermediate location between the primate cities and rural zones, which form the network of urban settlements that fills the urbanization process between the primate cities and the rural zones. Therefore, considering the secondary cities and their problems within the urban development process substantially increases the process’s success rates. This consideration can be achieved by finding an efficient tool/ methodology that deals with the city’s problems, such as urban sprawl.
Accordingly, this research seeks to study the urban sprawl inside secondary cities and propose a methodology to mitigate this phenomenon and produce regular urban growth, applying to secondary Egyptian cities as an example of these cities in developing countries. The research achieves its objectives in five chapters, in addition to its results and recommendations part. In chapter one, the research explains its main problem and introduces its implemented works across its chapters. Regarding chapters two and three, they form the research’s theoretical part as chapter two discusses urban sprawl’s properties, and chapter three tries to understand secondary cities and their characteristics. Regarding the research’s analytical part, chapter four represents it by assessing the performance of the locally authorized tools/ methodologies used to control urban growth and mitigate urban sprawl (The Strategic Plans), determining their pros and cons. Subsequently, the research moves to chapter five, demonstrating how the research’s principal finding, the newly proposed methodology for mitigating urban sprawl in secondary Egyptian cities, is formulated, tested, and updated. Finally, the research ends with its main results and recommendations. Besides, it includes its references list and appendices that clarify the questionnaires used in chapters four and five.
