Abstract

Before and after having a hysterectomy, women have a wide range of physical, psychological, emotional, social, and sexual issues, including backache, vaginal discharge, weakness, pain, weight gain, incontinence, and trouble sitting or walking. There was a feeling of incompleteness when the uterus was removed. Discharge planning that is properly designed and implemented benefits women’s health and lowers hospital readmission rates.
The present study aimed to evaluate effect of implementing evidence-based practices guidelines on women’s knowledge and practices regarding self-care after hysterectomy.
The main findings of the study can be summarized as follows:
• As regard to personal data of the women, the current study revealed that the mean age was (46.4+7.23 years), nearly three-quarters of them (70 %) were illiterate and three-quarters of them were married (75 %). Regarding parity, it was found that nearly three-quarters of them (71.7 %) had 4 & more parity, and two thirds of them (66.7 %) had 4 & more living children.
• The study revealed that the majority of the women (81.70 %) were resident in rural areas and the great majority of them (90 %) were housewives.
• Regarding gynaecological history, the study revealed that nearly three quarters of the women (71.7 %) didn’t have previous history of gynaecological surgeries and nearly half of them (48.3 %) had a hysterectomy performed because of AUB. It was found that the majority of the women (86.7 %) have total hysterectomy type and more than three quarters (76.7 %) of them had their ovaries removed during surgery.
• Regarding women’s total knowledge level, the results illustrated that the majority of the women (88.30 %) had inadequate knowledge regarding self-care after hysterectomy before implementing EBP guidelines. There was a highly statistically significant improvement (P value=.001) in the total knowledge level while, it was found that all of the women (100 %) had adequate knowledge after implementing EBP guidelines.
• Regarding women’s total practices level, the results illustrated that the vast majority (98.30 %) of them had unsatisfactory practices regarding self-care after hysterectomy before implementing EBP guidelines. There was a highly statistically significant improvement (P value=.001) in the total practices level while, it was found that all of the women (100 %) had satisfactory practices after implementing EBP guidelines.
• There was statistically significant difference between women’s total knowledge level regarding self-care after hysterectomy and their personal data regarding residence & level of education (P value= .001) & (P value= .007) respectively in the pre-test. All of the women had adequate knowledge in the post-test.
• There was a highly statistically significant (P value=.001) mild positive correlation (r=.409) between women’s total knowledge level & total practices level regarding self-care after hysterectomy before implementing EBP guidelines. All of the women had adequate knowledge and satisfactory practices after implementing EBP guidelines.
• The current study illustrated that the majority of the women (86.6 %) complained of night sweats & hot flashes, which were assessed 6 weeks after hysterectomy.
• The current study illustrated that there was statistically significant difference (P value = .008) between women’s post-operative health problems (night sweets &hot flashes) and the type of their hysterectomy performed.
