Abstract The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting firm performance of women entrepreneurs in the Egyptian context. There are many factors that can affect the performance of firms owned by women entrepreneurs. Many factors have been studied extensively before in research reporting consistent results, however, others show inconsistent findings and results due to the changes in the context and conditions. This thesis takes a preliminary step towards addressing the relationship of these contextual factors and the firm performance owned by the Egyptian women entrepreneurs. This research aims to highlight the critical role of women entrepreneurs through this study, because, despite the fact that the number of women entrepreneurs is rapidly increasing, this field area is understudied in MENA region and in Egypt particularly (Hattab, 2012; Mozumdar et al,2020). A mixed methods research design has been used including exploratory interviews of 10 Egyptian women entrepreneurs followed by a survey-based questionnaire with 143 valid responses collected through a non-probability snowball sampling technique from Egyptian women entrepreneurs of both formal and informal businesses. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS. Results indicate that industry experience and relevant educational background both have a positive relationship with firm performance, whereas entrepreneurial experience and educational level has no relationship with firm performance. Both push and pull motives are not related to the firm performance. Also, the results show that work-family conflict has a negative effect on firm performance, however, this negative effect can be reduced through increasing the level of social capital of the woman entrepreneur. |
