Abstract

PD is a neurodegenerative disease that cause irreversible deterioration in cognitive function and prominent motor dysfunction including bradykinesia, rest tremor, rigidity, and postural instability with the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra.
PD occurs due to degeneration of dopaminergic neuron in the central nervous system and that caused by aggregation of misfolded protein called (alpha-synuclein) that found postmortem in the retinal cells of patients and explained visual alteration happened in the disease.
In the last years, it was found that retina can act like a window for the central nervous system, as its structural and functional changes can be used as biomarkers and can predict any neurodegenerative changes in the brain.
Considering this data, this study aimed to investigate the retina and retinal vessel characteristics in patients with PD compared to health controls and its relation to the disease state.
Entire enrolled PD patients were subjected to an extensive clinical evaluation including Comprehensive medical history and neurological examination.
Disease Severity was assessed using MDS-UPDRS during OFF and ON states, H&Y and Schwab and England activities of daily living scale while NMS were assessed by using Arabic version of NMSS, BDI scale and PDQ-39. Also cognitive assessment done by using MMSE visual assessment done as regard VEP, TCD, OCTA parameters.
The study highlight that there was a progressive reduction in the OCTA parameter as well as TCD parameter in PWPD in comparison to control group. So OCTA could be used as a biomarker for early diagnosis of PD.
