Abstract Osteoarthritis is the most common type of joint disease. It affect 20 million person in United states alone resulting in histopathologic and radiological changes. Two types are present primary and secondary osteoarthritis. In primary osteoarthritis there is no apparent cause while in the secondary osteoarthritis there is an apparent cause that causes the progression of osteoarthritis.Arthroscopic anatomy of the hip is divided into two main compartments; the central and peripheral compartments and are separated by acetabular labrum. The central compartment is approached by main portals and with traction while the peripheral compartment is approached by accessory portal and without traction.Portals used in hip arthroscopy is divided into main portals which are anterior, anterolateral and posterolateral and accessory portals. The progression of hip osteoarthritis begin with degenerative changes in the articular cartilages a result of excessive loading healthy joint as in primary osteoarthritis or relatively normal loading of a previously normal joint as in secondary osteoarthritis. The pathological changes affecting the hip affect the weight bearing areas early where there is swelling of the cartilage and this is accompanied by elevated level of proteoglycans and this stage is called hypertrophic repair of articular cartilage, by the time and with more stress there is more softening of the articular cartilage, loss of elasticity, narrowing of joint spac and osteophytes formation. |
