Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of intra-chamber extension of lithium
disilicate endocrowns on the fracture resistance and failure modes of endodontically treated
molars after thermo-mechanical loading
Methodology: 40 recently extracted human molar teeth from patients ranging from 20 to 50 years
old were collected from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Department of Faculty of Dentistry,
Cairo University. An approval from the Research Ethics Committee of Cairo University was
received. The teeth were intact, free from caries or any fillings, without cracks, fractures or wear.
Results: Only one specimen in control sound teeth group did not withstand the artificial aging
process and was rated as a failure. It did not fracture completely but an open crack was seen at the
end of the chewing simulation. All the other specimens survived the 5000 thermal cycles and the
1.2 million chewing cycles. No cracks were detected in any of them and were all subjected to
fracture test.
Conclusions: The present investigation was designed to assess the effect of intra-chamber
extension of lithium disilicate endocrowns on the fracture resistance and failure modes of
endodontically treated molars after thermo-mechanical loading
