This study presents a theoretical and practical framework that searches into the nature of the relationship that binds between literary texts and movies; a relation that involves points of convergence and divergence in terms of the methods of presentation used by each of them as well as the process of addition and omission which embodies the backbone of the creative vision of those in charge of the cinema industry. The title of the study, “The Transformations of Narrative Discourse in movies based on the Works of Yahia Haqqi and Yusuf Edris… A Comparative Analytical Study of the Narrative and the Film”, is meant to define the features of the critical treatment which gives a sufficient space for approaching the creative narratives of two of the literary icons renowned for their creative writings and their keen interest in language and its levels of expressiveness which combine between formal and colloquial speech. Then, it addresses the space dedicated to the literary text in the world of movies and whether there is a contradiction between the language of the literary work which is characterized by heeding those levels of language on the one hand and the cinematic language which used completely different expressive means dependent on camera movement, shooting angles, the shot’s size, music, sound effects and other modes of expression on the other hand.
In order to achieve the objective of this study, the critical study is divided into two chapters and seven topic-themed chapters which adopt the semiotic approach with its ability to connect between the significant signs in new literary and artistic systems and their reference within the general cultural framework. Through deploying this approach, the study could uncover the strengths the literary texts bestow upon the movies, and present a critical reading that covers all the aspects of the literary works and the films based on them in a way that critically approaches both the literary work and the movie as equals, and deviates from the stereotype readings that always render the literary work triumphant over the film, or present a critical vision of the film totally severed from the literary work. Thus, the current study is but a step on the path towards a serious academic study of what combines between literature and cinema. Besides, it is a development of the previous critical views that established this kind of studies and affirmed its importance.
