Abstract

Poorly controlled hypertension is a public health problem mostly caused by non-compliance to antihypertensive medications and life style modifications. Compliance behavior is subject to change by different behavioral change models. Health Belief Model is one of the most widely used models in hypertension. The current study aimed at testing the effect of educational and behavioral interventions on compliance to treatment protocol among hypertensive patients. It was conducted on 200 primary hypertensive patients recruited from New Kasr El-Aini Teaching Hospital. Interventional study design with pretest and posttest was used. Patients received educational and behavioral individual interventions and followed up after one and three months. Statistically significant improvements were detected in patients Knowledge about hypertension, beliefs regarding hypertension and its treatment, compliance to life style modifications and medication adherence after one month and maintained after 3 months. Smoking habits and BMI of studied hypertensive patients were not changed post intervention. Blood pressure statistically significant decreased after the intervention in first month follow up only. It was recommended to integrate educational and behavioral strategies in hypertensive patients{u2019} care.
