Abstract

Purpose: the purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of Ultra Violet-C (UVC) and topical Aloe vera as a method of treatment for wound healing in patients with partial thickness (2nd degree) burn injury. Methods: Forty male patients who had superficial burn at hand and forearm and received routine medical treatment, were chosen from burn department, El-Helmeya Military Hospital between Dec 2014 and May 2015. Their ages ranged from 20-40 years. They were divided randomly into two groups. group (A) received the topical Aloe vera therapy in addition to routine medical treatment. group (B) received ultraviolet radiation in addition to routine medical treatment. The measurement equipment of wound surface area tracing (WSAT) was done before treatment (pre-treatment) and after 7 (Post (1)), 14 (Post (2)) and 21days (Post (3)) of treatment application Results: The topical Aloe vera group (group A) showed therapeutic superiority when compared with the ultraviolet group (group B). Conclusion: Topical Aloe vera therapy showed more effectiveness than Ultraviolet radiation after 21-days from the initiation of treatment in healing of partial thickness (2nd degree) burn injuries. No side effects were noted with Aloe vera therapy
