Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of combined upper and lower body resistive exercises on bone mineral density in pre- menopausal women. This study was carried out on thirty pre-menopausal women. Their age ranged from 35 to 40 years. They were divided randomly into two groups equal in number: group A (control group) consisted of fifteen pre-menopausal women who took only their usual daily calcium intake and group B (study group) who performed combined upper and lower resistive exercises for thirty minutes, three times per week, for 12 weeks in addition to their usual daily calcium intake. All subjects in both groups (A and B) were assessed pre and post treatment through measuring bone mineral density (BMD) of hip and lumbar regions by DEXA. (Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry). Results showed that there was a statistical non-significant difference between both groups (A and B) pre- treatment in the T-score of hip and lumbar regions, where the P value was (> 0.05). While, post-treatment there was a statistical highly significant difference between both groups (A and B) in the difference mean in the T-score of the hip and lumbar regions, where the P value was 0.001. The percent of improvement in group (A) of T-score of hip and lumbar regions was 2.11% and 5.31% respectively. While, the percent of improvement in group (B) of T-score of hip and lumbar regions was 57.26% and 17.16% respectively in favor of group (B). So, it could be concluded that combined both upper and lower resistive exercise could improve the bone mineral density (BMD) in both hip and lumbar regions in pre-menopausal women
