Abstract

Introduction: Esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula are relatively common malformations occurring in approximately 1 in 3500 births. In around half of the cases (syndromic esophageal atresia), there are associated anomalies, while in the remainder (non-syndromic cases), EA/TEF occur in isolation. Results: 9 patients (9%) of our patients were preterm, but unfortunately no one of them lived & the p value was significant.14 patient were admitted < 1 day, 48 patient were admitted between 2-6 days, and 36 patients were admitted beyond the 7th day of life& the p value was also significant. 5 patients weighed <1.5 Kg before the operation, 16 patients weighed between 1.5-<2 Kg, 43 patients weighed between 2-2.5 Kg, and 34 patients weighed>2.5 Kg & the p value was significant. 38 patient had associated cardiac anomalies, out of them 11patients lived while the rest 27patients died & the p value was significant. Regarding morbidities they were as follows: sepsis (29%), pneumonia (20%), leak (15%), pneumothorax (7%), collapse (7%), wound infection (5%),and empyema (2%). Conclusion: The overall mortality of our study was 58%, while the overall morbidity was 48.8%
