Abstract Fluoxetine hydrochloride (fluoxetine HCI) is a novel antidepressant drug. It is widely used in various types of psychiatric disorders like major depression, bipolar depression and obsessive compulsive disorders. Fluoxetine HCI is a selective serotonic rcuptake inhibitor and possesses weak affinity for muscarinic receptors and therefore exhibits lesser anticholinergic side effects than that caused by other traditional antidepressants like tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOLs). Dose of fluoxetine HCI ranges from 20 - 80mg administered as one to four capsules a day. This dose and frequency may cause enhanced drug related side effects and may pose compliance problem. It has also been reported that fluoxetine HCI undergoes hepatic first pass metabolism. Among the common adverse effects associated with fluoxetine and tisted in the prescribing information, the effects with the greatest difference from placebo are nausea, insomnia, somnolence, anorexia, anxiety, nervousness, asthenia and tremor |
