Abstract

Oxidative stress has been suggested to have a possible role in the etiology of oral lichen planus (OLP), yet it is still elusive. The current investigation attempts to evaluate the adjunctive use of green tea polyphenols, as an antioxidant agent, with topical corticosteroids versus topical corticosteroids alone in management of OLP patients and its impact on the level of salivary total oxidative capacity (TOC). Forty subjects were enrolled in this study; divided into 3 groups. Fifteen OLP patients who were treated with topical corticosteroids, 15 OLP patients who were treated with topical corticosteroids and green tea extract tablets and 10 systemically healthy subjects as control group who didn{u2019}t receive any treatment. Pain score, clinical score and salivary TOC assayed by ELISA were evaluated at base line and 4 weeks after treatment. In both OLP groups there was a statistically significant difference reduction in the pain and clinical scores 4 weeks after treatment. Regarding salivary TOC, control group showed statistically significant lower levels compared to OLP groups at baseline, while no difference was detected between the diseased groups. Four weeks after treatment, OLP patients treated with topical corticosteroids and green tea showed statistically significant reduction in salivary TOC than OLP patients treated with topical corticosteroids alone. Green tea extract might be considered as an antioxidant adjunctive therapy for OLP patient{u2019}s, suggesting a possible role for oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of OLP
