Abstract Architectural identity created by architectural designers in every society represents the crystallization of social and cultural aspects over time. It is the foundation by which the community reflects its cultural heritage and values and its mean of evolution over time. That forms a way of life producing a common sense of place. The Heliopolis district has a unique architectural identity, mainly a mixture of neo-Islamic and classic European designs. The district’s plan had a pattern of garden city’s ideals, where the greenery was having an essential role. Unfortunately, for decades, the Heliopolis district has been losing some of its unique buildings and parts of its urban fabric and experiencing architectural and urban changes that could lead to either losing or restoring the architectural identity. The architectural identity of Heliopolis, starting from defining it, and discussing how to conserve it in the era of globalization, communication revolution, and the latest designs and construction technologies is the purpose of our research. The thesis aims to illustrate the effect of globalization, the internet revolution, and the latest modern trends on the architectural identity of the residential neighborhood of Heliopolis. The purpose is to find a balance between responding to globalization and the latest technologies and yet conserve the unique architectural and urban identity and architectural heritage. We cannot recreate the past and live in it, but we also must respect our architectural identity. Achieving a distinguished sense of place and appreciation of architectural identity are essential. |
