Abstract

This study was done to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of growth arrest specific protein 6 in patients of sepsis, septic shock and MODS. The study was conducted on 45 children with sepsis, septic shock, MODS admitted to MUCH PICU . Another group of 45 healthy children of matched age and sex were considered as control group. Blood samples for serum growth arrest specific protein 6 were taken from the cases at the first day of hospital admission and compared to its level in control group. we continued to observe the cases for determining their outcome. The study showed Interestingly, the current study showed that GAS6 level at cutoff level 3.92, has accuracy 75.5% in prediction of sepsis with PPV=71%, NPV=81%, sensitivity= 84.4% and specificity= 66.7%. While, in prediction of death, GAS6 level has accuracy 57.8% with PPV=72.7%, NPV=43.5%, sensitivity= 55.2% and specificity= 62.7%. Accordingly these results suggest that GAS6 can be used in diagnosis of sepsis with sensitivity = 84.4% , specificity = 66.7% , PPV = 71% and NPV = 81% as a good negative marker . in contrast GAS6 can’t be used as a prognostic marker with sensitivity = 55.2% , specificity = 62.7% , PPV =72.7 and NPV = 43.5% .
