Abstract The neonatal period, from birth to the first 28 days of life, is the most hazardous period of life because of the various diseases that the neonate faces. In this period of life the mortality rate is highest. Over the last two decades, the world has made substantial progress in the reduction of mortality among children. However, the change in neonatal mortality is not as significant as the change in children aged 1to 59 months (63%) (Seid SS , et al. ,2019) The rapid decline in neonatal mortality during the past 4 decades has been attributed to improvements in neonatal intensive care. This decline was attributable to improved condition of the infants on NICU(Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) admission (improved birth weight, higher Apgar scores, and better physiologic ability) (Siva Saranappa S.B, et al. , 2014) There are multiple risk factors related to admission of newborns at NICU as low birth weight , neonatal sepsis , hypothermia , hypoglycemia , respiratory distress and other factors. These risk factors are also considered as causes of death beside prematurity and congenital malformations (Seid SS , et al. ,2019) Knowing the disease patterns and causes in the neonatology unit and the disease wise outcome can inform the required efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality Thus, in this study we will assess the causes and risk factors for neonataladmission at NICU of Assuit University Children Hospital (AUCH) and theoutcome for the newborns born at Assuit University Women’s Health Hospital and detection of different factors that can affect the outcome This study was done at NICU of Assuit University Children Hospital in the period between 1st of March 2020 to 31th of August 2020 and included 320 patients who were delivered at Assuit University Women’s Health Hospital In this study there were 197(61.6%) alive neonates and 123 (38.4%)dead neonates In this study maternal history was taken from maternal records in Assuit University Women’s Health Hospital to know all possible risk factors and the newborns were examined carefully and all necessary investigations were done to diagnose the case of the neonate and to give him the appropriate management. |
