Abstract

Until recently, the gold standard for diagnosis of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been the molecular detection of mecA gene. In 2011, MRSA harbouring a divergent mecA gene with only 70% nucleotide homology to the mecA gene termed mecALGA251 or mecC gene was reported. Although mecC MRSA are rare and have only been reported in Europe to date, they present a potential diagnostic problem when there is reliance on molecular detection of mecA for identification and confirmation of MRSA. The aim of our study was to detect whether or not mecC MRSA has emerged at Cairo University Hospitals, Egypt. Over a 3 month period, we collected 198 staphylococcus aureus isolates that were diagnosed as MRSA based on their resistance to oxacillin 1æg or cefoxitin 30æg or both by disc diffusion. Further in our study, 3 out of the 198 isolates were found to be methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and not MRSA so the actual number of MRSA isolates in our study was 195. All 195 MRSA isolates underwent multiplex conventional PCR for mecA and mecC genes and all were positive for the mecA gene and none contained the mecC gene. The prevalence of MRSA among staphylococcus aureus isolates at Cairo university hospitals was 84.4%
