Abstract
Iron deficiency and intestinal parasitic infection are still nowadays, an important public health problem concern worldwide, mainly in specific geographical areas and among groups with low socio-economic status because of the high frequency reached in several countries as well as its pathological consequences. A major difficulty in interpreting theses data is the fact that parasites and nutritional deficiency can coexist and influence each other.Geographical conditions and poor nutritional and socioeconomic status contribute to making Egypt favorable area for parasitic infections.Intestinal parasitic infections are the most common infestations among school age children and they tend to occur in high intensity in this age group. Helminthic infestation lead to nutritional deficiency , iron depletion and impaired physical developments, which will have negative consequences on cognitive function and learning ability.Several studies suggested that parasitic infection can affect the iron status of infected patients. The mechanisms by which these parasites can compromise iron status include anorexia, competition for nutrients, chronic micro hemorrhages caused by mucosal lesions, and decreased iron absorption .The objective of this survey is to study the relationship between intestinal parasitic infections and iron deficiency anemia in school children .This study was conducted on 102 school children ranging in age from 6 to 12 years attending El Khalige Primary School at El Kalige Village - Dakahlia governorate. The children had been subjected to full medical history, full examinations, complete stool examination, blood investigation include CBC, Serum ferritin,Transferrin saturation and TIBC .
