Abstract

The phoniatrics is concerned with the study and understanding of human communication and its disorders, assessment and treatment of communication disorders that result in communication disabilities, whereas the specialist responsible for treating these disorders is called a phoniatrician. Therefore, several studies have investigated the prevalence of communication disorders with varying results. These studies are vital for effectively raising awareness the physicians about the communicative disorders, in addition to planning, evaluating service delivery, and future preventions. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness and knowledge of the different physicians from different specialties about the communicative disorders at different levels of health care units within the greater Cairo area to estimate any possible knowledge gap of these disorders. Subjects and methods: To that purpose a sample of 320 participants completed the questionnaires. Results: Female physicians in secondary health care units are more aware than other physicians. Conclusion: It seems that physicians’ awareness and knowledge of communicative disorders is limited and less than desirable for the health and growth of the profession, the prevention of communicative disorders and the delivery of services to persons with communicative disorders
