Abstract

Objectives: Evaluation of CD10 immunohistochemical expression in tumoral and stromal cells of both benign melanocytic nevi (BMN) and melanomas, and correlation of its expression with various clinicopathological parameters to evaluate its possible prognostic value. Methods: A total of 47 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded melanocytic neoplasm tissue sections were randomly collected (24 BMN and 23 melanomas). All the available data were collected from the patients{u2019} reports. The paraffin blocks were sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin stains for histological reassessment. Additional sections were immunostained with CD10. Membranous and /or cytoplasmic staining was considered as positive expression. CD10 expression was studied separately in the tumor cells (tCD10) and tumor stroma (sCD10). Results: CD10 was highly expressed in melanomas (82.6% tCD10+ and 87% sCD10+) than in BMN (16.7% tCD10+ and 50% sCD10+), with statistically significant relationships (P values <0.001 and 0.007 respectively) and high sensitivity (82.6% and 83.3% respectively) and specificity (62.5% and 80% respectively). However, no statistically significant relationships were detected between CD10 expression and the following parameters: age, sex, tumor thickness, tumor largest diameter and deep margin involvement. Moreover, a statistically significant relationship was detected between the tumor type and tumor thickness (P value=0.011), ulceration (P value <0.001), deep margin involvement - P value=0.001 and age - P value <0.001
