Abstract In the current work, we highlight the sources, classification, and function of antioxidants. Firstly, the different sources of antioxidants such as plants and their endophytes, mushrooms, honey, and microbes are discussed. Additionally, the classification of the antioxidants into enzymatic and non-enzymatic as well as their classification into release-type and scavenger-type according to reactive mechanism has been explained. On the other hand, we explained the different functions of antioxidants such as their role as free radical scavenger and use in food products, as well as their biological activities such as anti-diabetic, protection against hepatotoxicity, cardiac oxidative stress, and neuroinflammatory disorders. |
