Abstract

Objective: Ration contamination with CdCl2 leads to serious economic loss. Current study aimed to explain ameliorative effect of GSE either alone or in combination with CdCl2.
Methods:
One hundred and fifty chicks were used in the current study. They were divided into 6 equal groups; group I: kept as control, group II: given grape seed extract by the first dose (GSE 1) 250 mg/kg, group III: given grape seed extract by the second dose (GSE 2) 500 mg/kg diet, group IV: given cadmium chloride (Cd Cl2) to evaluate the undesirable effects by the dose (100 mg/kg diet) group V: given combination of GSE 1+ Cd Cl2, group VI: given combination of GSE 2+ Cd Cl2. At the end of the 3rd and the 5th weeks the following parameters were measured: Growth performance parameters, biochemical parameters (liver enzymes (ALT and AST), total protein (TP), albumin, globulin, A/G ratio and kidney function (creatinine and uric acid), also, antioxidants (GSH, SOD, CAT and MDA), brain antioxidants (SOD, CAT, MDA and NO) as well as cytokines (IL-1β, IL-10 and TNF-α) were determined.
Results:
The results showed that GSE extract significantly ameliorated the levels of serum hepatic and renal damage markers, antioxidant and cytokines that deteriorated by Cd Cl2. Histopathological examination of liver, kidney, spleen, bursa and brain tissues as well as BAX brain sections were in concurrence with the biochemical, immunological and RT-PCR results. Conclusion: It is logical to consider that the immunostimulator, antioxidative properties of GSE is mechanistically achieved. So, GSE could be used as protective agents against ration contamination.
